DOT bars bus drivers and commercial truckers from texting while driving

It’s coming. And soon. Of course, you know darn well we’re referring to the day where no human in any nation can text and drive legally, and we’re seeing the US Department of Transportation get us one step closer with its latest mandate. Effective immediately, bus drivers and interstate commercial truckers are disallowed from texting while operating a motor automobile, and should they select to send that one last SMS anyway, they’ll be hit with “civil or criminal fines of up to $2,750.” Needless to say, the Advocates for Highway Safety are pretty stoked about the notion, but they confess that this isn’t taking things far enough. And for anyone who has been sideswiped by someone special telling someone more special “I LUVRZ U XOXO LOL” while doing 80 on the I-15, well, they’d probably agree.

Dynamic Controls unveils integrated iPhone app for wheelchair controls

Dynamic Controls has just taken the wraps off of its new iPhone application which should be of great interest to those who use a wheelchair on a daily basis. The application — which connects with the wheelchair via Bluetooth and has a built-in charger for the iPhone or iPod touch — enables diagnostics to check for any problems with the chair. It also allows users to get real-time information, speed information, and compass data.

Tesla Motors IPO coming ‘any day’ now, says report

Word on the street — and by that we mean Reuters — is that Tesla’s looking to go public with the company “any day.” The luxury electric vehicle make, whose Roadster still goes for a cool $109,000, would be the first US auto company to offer an IPO since Ford way back in 1956, states MSNBC. Quite a notable event, indeed, but earlier comments by Tesla investors (via Autoblog Green) recommend “any day now” might be any time between now and September 2010.

Inflatable seat belts. At a glance, that doesn’t seem like such a bad idea after all, particularly for those rear seat passengers who aren’t blessed with two large bags or air right in front of their chest. We’re guessing the top brass at Ford feel pretty much the same way, as the outfit has just announced that these very devices will be making their debut in the next-generation Ford Explorer before rolling out across the fleet. Of course, Lexus is also planning to shove these into its ultra-luxurious LFA (which will probably make a grand total of 14 wealthy owners feel really, really safe), but it’s tough to tell which car will hit the showroom first. LTE Connected Car redefines the ‘mobile’ in mobile broadband (video)

If you think cellphones have become overbearingly complex, look away now. A partnership of tech companies and content providers, known as the ng Connect Program, has revealed a prototype “LTE Connected Vehicle,” which, as you might surmise, combines 4G mobile broadband connectivity with a bunch of cloud-sourced facilities, such as video on demand, audio libraries, and multiplayer gaming. It can also serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot, connect directly to home automation or monitoring systems, and probably cook you scrambled eggs if you ask nicely. A Toyota Prius serves as the guinea pig for this new concept, and we’ve got video of the whole shebang after the break.

AT&T CruiseCast satellite service halts activations, will refund customers

It wasn’t too hard to see this one coming after reports of “financial difficulties” and a potential early demise starting cropping up last month, but it looks like AT&T’s CruiseCast in-car satellite service is now officially done for. According to RaySat COO Mike Grannan (AT&T’s partner in the service), all new activations have now ceased, and existing customers will soon apparently be able to get a refund for the cost of installation, de-installation, equipment and service. For those keeping track, the service just launched in June of this year and, while no installed base numbers seem to be available, it doesn’t appear to have caused much more than a blip on the radar, with it hindered in part by a hefty $1,300 up-front cost.
