Will Wright to demo Spore in San Francisco later tonight

Posted on 02 July 2008 by admin

Spore demo happening later tonight - Image 1If you live near or in San Francisco and have some free time on your hands tonight, you may want to head on over to 1 Stockton Street (that’s the San Francisco Apple Store, for your information) to watch a specially prepared game demonstration at 7 p.m. PDT.

What makes this demo so important? Well, the game in question is the long-awaited Spore (Computer, Nintendo Wii, DS, Mac, Mobile), and the presenter of the demo will be MaxisWill Wright himself. No word on what platform they’ll be using to present the demo, but we anticipate it’ll probably the Personal computer version, up on a projector screen so it’ll be simple to see.

The demo will be of the full game itself, so if you’ve been reading up on Spore or spending time with Spore’s Creature Creator, this would be a free show you’ll probably want to watch.

TimeCapsule v0.42b1 - improved call favorites and delete functions

Posted on 01 July 2008 by admin

Screenshot of TimeCapsule for iPhone - Image 1Developer hc recently rolled out the latest update to the iPhone homebrew application, TimeCapsule. The latest build of the app, version 0.42b1, includes a lot of substantial features to help improve its capability to further backup your iPhone’s different utilities.

The biggest improvement made to TimeCapsule v0.42b1 would have to be the changes made to its delete functions. The new function now streamlines itself to avoid the accidental deletion of any backup files. In addition, there was also a bug fix added for the call favorites function for the program.

Here’s the complete list of changes made to TimeCapsule v0.42b1 since our previous coverage of the app:

  • Call Favourites:
    • fixed: non-stop loop when backing up call favourites
    • Show number of call favourites in backup
  • Change in delete functions
    • delete individual backup available for all users (I forgot to add this function)
    • added delete all backups function (the clear button at the bottom navigation bar)
    • prompt user to enter a certain number before delete all backups proceed to prevent accidental deletion
    • the trash-can button clear

textReader 1.0Beta6 - added RTF file format support

Posted on 30 June 2008 by admin

Screenshots of textReader iPhone homebrew app - Image 1

Homebrew developer pyefox current made a rather hefty update with the iPhone text reader application entitled “textReader”. Version 1.0Beta6 includes several useful additions which certainly steps up the previous version’s functionality.

Many of the new changes in textReader v1.0Beta6 include additional support for several text file formats, most notably for RTF files. Aside from that, several small tweaks were also added to help spruce up the app’s interface.

Here are the specifics of all the new stuff added to textReader 1.0Beta6 since our previous coverage of the homebrew program:

  • Fix RTF NLS/Encoding Support. The RTF file will have the encodings applied like any other file - ideally I’d use the encodings specified within the file but that will be left for a future release. I’ve tried it with English, Chinese, and French RTF files and it seems to be working.
  • Fix “No Encoding Specified” error
  • Add extra backgrounds - Thanks to the www.weiphone.com folks!
  • Minor additions to RTF formatting that were broken in Beta4 (believe it or not, a Microsoft bug!)
  • Adds initial support for RTF files … let me know where formatting needs to be improved.
  • Treat IDEOGRAPHIC SPACE like a normal blank
  • Fix Indent paragraph Original (I hope)
  • Add option to display background images - just put them in /Applications/textReader.app/images and choose them via the settings page
  • WARNING - make sure the execute bit is set on the /Applications/textReader.app/images directory or you won’t be able to choose the images!!!
  • Should improve character justify - the length was not being calculated properly
  • Hopefully repairs problem were settings were sometimes lost (settings are now saved when you choose the value rather than when you choose “Done”)
  • Improves Strip Line Feeds - Format: line breaks should be chosen in superior spots when words run together - i.e. “this,is-not;easy”
  • Adds support for unencrypted/unprotected eReader/Peanut Press PDB files. The PML processing is pretty minimal at the moment, and I suspect that some files will not work, so let me know (I have seen it work with fictionwise, eReader, and Manybooks files). NOTE: As always, this code will NOT work with DRM‘d files.
  • Adds an option to control how the first line of a paragraph is indented. A paragraph is defined as the text following a line feed character that is not ignored. You can set it to display the original formatting (usually not very pretty), no indentation, or 1-6 blank spaces.
  • Adds an option to enable pinch/stretch gestures to increase or decrease the font size. This is really a gimmick, but the same can be stated for most of the code.

The developer mentioned that, as of this beta version, textReader now supports eReader, Mobipocket, RTF, HTML, Text, FB2, Plucker, and Palm Doc formats.

If you’re interested in downloading textReader, we’ve provided the file bundle containing the homebrew app through the link below. For more information on textReader’s different features and how to install it, check out pyefox’s Google code site, accessible through the Via link below.

Posted on 29 June 2008 by admin

vlc4iphone v0.9.5 (Formerly ZodPlay): Media streaming added - Image 1Work appears to be progressing well for ZodTTD’s vlc4iphone homebrew, which has been recently updated to version 0.9.5 Beta. The developer has decided to drop vlc4iphone’s new name, ZodPlay, due to confusion among its users.

The dev’s original intent was to create two separate media player homebrews, with vlc4iphone being based on VLC, while ZodPlay was to be based on FFmpeg and FFplay. ZodTTD has reportedly dropped

PocketTouch 1.4.1: control your music with taps and swipes

Posted on 27 June 2008 by admin

PocketTouch v1.4.1 - Image 1Looking for an easier way to control music on your iPhone? Enter PocketTouch, a homebrew iPhone app that lets users control their music using simple taps and swipes. The app has already been through a few versions, and now developer Skylar has released a new one: version 1.4.1.

This latest update only has one readily-apparent new feature: a Volume Sensitivity option which can be accessed via the Settings menu. This new feature lets users choose between three levels of sensitivity - 1, 2, and 3 - with 1being the least sensitive and 3 being the most sensitive.

On the not-so-apparent side of things, version 1.4 carries the following bug fixes and enhancements:

  • Completely reworked volume controller. This answers a long time request for more constant volume control while eliminating an anti-deafening safety net I had in place in all previous versions. Incidentally, this method uses much less math, resulting for a more snappier feel to the change. And while I was at it, I fixed the bug (read:laziness on my part) where you had to lift your finger totally off of the screen before changing swipe direction.
  • Improved performance by 400 , thus prolonging battery life.
  • Localization support for several languages:
    • Chinese (Simplified and Traditional)
    • Dutch
    • English
    • French
    • Italian
    • Japanese
    • Polish
    • Swedish

PocketTouch v1.4.1 is available on the BigBoss source, accessible via the source link below.

Mac OS X 10.5.4 Update - fixes shutdown bug, requirement for MobileMe

Posted on 25 June 2008 by admin

Apple Mac OS X 10.5.4 Update - Image 1Not long after the announcement of the first pre-release build for the upcoming Mac OS X 10.5.4 Update, Apple has once again revealed the details of a second build which will include several more repairs for Mac systems.

Labeled 9E12, the new build will carry various code corrections that will fix the notorious bug which tends to leave some Macs hanging upon shutdown. Another bug that prevents applications from being assigned to Spaces via drag-and drop will also be addressed.

As with its previously released updates, Apple advised developers to evaluate the new software broadly. In particular, the Cupertino-based company has listed the monitoring of almost two dozen core components, including iLife compatibility, printing, networking, AirPort, and common applications such as Mail, iCal, and iChat.

The 150MB Mac OS X 10.5.4 Update will be needed for Leopard users who wish to use the newly unveiled MobileMe service. Everyone can anticipate the software to be released a few weeks ahead of MobileMe’s July 11 launch date.
