Intel turns 40

Happy 40th birthday, Intel! Now that you’re over the hill, we’d recommend buying a Porsche, building completely custom one-off chips for Apple, or in some other way jeopardizing your financial well being in order to actualize pent-up childhood dreams, but we’d state AMD’s current struggles are just about the ideal present you could’ve asked for. Sure, the EU is trying its ideal to put a damper on things, but don’t let that get you down, your ideal years are still to come. Maybe.

Kohjinsha SC3 convertible UMPC hits the test bench

Posted on 19 July 2008 by admin

Shortly after the Kohjinsha SC3 was removed from the comfy confines of its packaging and exposed for all to see, stated UMPC has managed to get reviewed. Initially, impressions were quite positive, as the reviewer noted that build quality was “superb,” the size was adorably small and the display satisfied all expectations. As for sheer performance, the Menlow-based rig excelled as it churned through applications with no massive lag issues; however, all that computing made the unit exceptionally warm, though it did remain quiet even when breaking a sweat. Battery life was shorter than advertised (only 2.5 hours), but aside from that, there wasn’t a whole lot to gripe about. Think it’s too good to be true? Head on down to the read link for videos, benchmarks and impressions.

Acer Aspire One gets reviewed, lost in the shuffle

Posted on 18 July 2008 by admin

At this point, it’s pretty hard to figure out which netbook is superior than another, but if you’ve been keyed in on Acer’s version for whatever reason, Laptop has a review sure to pique your interest. The Aspire One was praised just as soon as it left the box for its classy styling and super portable design. After getting down to business, however, reviewers felt that the typing experience was only “decent” and the touchpad was “cramped” — two things we actually would expect from a device of this stature. Nevertheless, the port selection was tolerable, the performance was passable and the battery life left a bit to be desired. As you can tell, this one seemed perfectly average on the whole, though it was deemed a “pretty good bargain” at $379. Huzzah?

Researcher claims to have discovered universal attack code for Intel chips: no one is safe

Posted on 17 July 2008 by admin

Also, he says he found Intel’s diary and is completely telling everybody about that one thing. But seriously, we think Kris Kaspersky is being a bit of a tease here. He claims to have found a flaw in Intel’s processors that would allow a hacker to bust up on a computer using JavaScript or TCP/IP, with no regard for what operating system the computer is running… only he won’t say what it is. He’s planning on unveiling the attack at the Hack In The Box conference in Malaysia this October, where he states he’ll show working code that can take control of personal, all of which he plans to release publicly. The attack takes advantage of known errata in chips, which most vendors have a workaround for in BIOS, but not all. XP, Vista, Linux, BSD and Mac operating systems are all vulnerable, so we all get to run around panicking until October — unless somebody figures it out first.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad SL400 gets reviewed

Posted on 16 July 2008 by admin

As the Centrino 2 train rolls on, we’ve found yet another standout that has already hit the test bench. The recently revealed SL400 is being aimed directly at mobile business professionals, but it’s also potent enough to handle basic 3D gaming and the occasional Blu-ray flick on those intercontinental flights. According to reviewers over at Laptop, this 14.1-incher was pretty swank overall, though a few minor niggles kept it from snagging a coveted Editor’s Choice award. First, a number of the ports are recessed, which might or might not grate your nerves, and while overall performance was satisfactory, the sluggish 5,400RPM hard drive was definitely frowned upon. Still, the great battery life, wireless performance and multimedia capabilities enabled it to claim 3.5 out of 5 stars, which means that you should probably give the full review a read before pulling the trigger on blind faith.

Sony Style is running a rather big teaser on its main page, featuring a quite distinctive power button and the blurb “Performance / Style / Mobility. Redefined.” Hrm. We wonder what it could be?

V12 Designs’ dual-screen laptop coming in two years?

Posted on 11 July 2008 by admin

No, not that dual-screen, silly. Or that one. Or that one! The dual-screen lappie we’re speaking about actually has two LCD panels, one of which takes the place of a traditional keyboard / trackpad. Reportedly, V12 Designs — which takes credit for dreaming up the design some four years ago — is working with an undisclosed US firm in order to bring said concept to market. We’re told that the keyboard display will likely support haptic feedback so users can feel when a keystroke is registered, and of course, voice recognition will also play a big role. It’s not that we don’t think these are coming, but V12’s Valerio Cometti is suggesting that they’ll be ready for consumption in a mere 16 months. Don’t hate us for being skeptical, but… we’re skeptical.
