Homebrew developer ZodTTD has finally released version 2.0.0 of his long-awaited Sega Genesis and Sega CD emulator, genesis4iphone. This version works with iPhones and iPod Touches running on firmware 2.x.x.
This release comes with the same skin as ZodTTD’s earlier release, mame4iphone, but the good news here is that you can actually change the skin yourself by editing the controller_hs1.png/.txt files in the Application directory of the app. Here’s a list of what else is new in v2.0.0:
- A port of Notaz’s continued support of PicoDrive.
- New interface/GUI similar to mame4iphone.
- Sound has been heavily improved! To enable sound, goto Now Playing and turn up the volume slider before entering a game.
- Save state support is now working.
- Supports zipped ROMs, and they happen to load much faster than unzipped ROMs…still!
- Sega CD support is implemented though currently untested by me.
genesis4iphone can be downloaded for free at ZodTTD’s public repository on Cydia.

You know what’s running out? February. That’s a tiny alarming considering that Palm had promised that totally rockin’ new cut of webOS, 1.4, before the month was out — but while we wait for this thing to actually happen, at least we’ve now got an official (or official-looking) changelog of the build out of the good folks at PreCentral. Besides a host of bug fixes, 1.4 is said to have performance boosts within the phone and calendar apps, a handful of messaging enhancements, new email sorting options, custom alert sounds for reminders (finally!), and — of course — the addition of video recording and Flash support on the Pre. Interestingly, it won’t have Flash out of the box — you’ll still need to download it from the Catalog, it seems. Head on over to PreCentral for the full log, and read really, really slowly just in case you’ve got a few more days to wait on this stuff.

For those of you who can’t wait for a factory-built electric car, and can’t swing the cash for a Tesla Roadster, a seller on eBay is offering up a recently converted 2001 Chrysler Sebring. This is the previous-generation Sebring, before the design went from plain to unsightly.
As this is written, there are still five day left to bid on this Sebring and the price tag is at $4,276. While this may seem like quite a deal, potential bidders might want to read the whole description before proceeding. The vehicle was converted by ATC of Texas just a few months ago. The current owner has only put 100 miles on the car and blames tough economic times for selling. We can’t help but suspect a bit of buyer’s remorse as well.
The engine compartment and trunk are stuffed with 24 6-volt flooded lead acid batteries. That’s enough to yield about 20-30 miles of realistic range. You can apparently push it 45 miles in some circumstances, but that’s not recommended since it shortens the battery life. No trunk space is left and the back end of the vehicle rides pretty low as a result of all that weight. Since it looks like the suspension has not been upgraded to cope with the mass, this thing will probably ride pretty rough. Also, you’ll probably want to charge it outdoors since the batteries give off hydrogen gas as they’re being stuffed with electrons. If all of those warnings haven’t already made you turn away, you can check out the auction here. Thanks to Joe for the tip!

You don’t think the Robot Apocalypse is upon us, but we assure you, it is. The HUMAVIPS project, which will span three years and hopefully result in robots being developed with “social skills,” might seem innocent — even beneficial — at first blush, but let’s consider it. Will “humanoids with auditory and visual capabilities in populated spaces” have more power than you, as an Earthling, would like? If all goes well, these robotic dudes and dudettes will be able to mimic what’s known as the “cocktail celebration effect,” which is superior explained as “the human ability to focus attention on just one person in the midst of other people, voices and background noise.” So yeah, this definitely goes two ways — on one hand, you could finally have a live-in robot that pays attention to your feelings as the world around you crumbles, but on the other, these guys won’t have any issue overlooking your wailing when it’s them bringing everything down. Yikes.

Jump down off that scud missile and holster your brew Droid owners, the stats are in for smartphone gender preferences. The numbers reported above are based on a AdMob survey of 963 total respondents consisting of 318 Android, 244 iPhone, 356 iPod touch and 45 webOS users in english speaking countries. According to the data collected between 5 February to the 16 February, men make up a whopping 73% of all Android device users. Even webOS, that smartphone OS from Palm that’s supposedly aimed at the ladies carries a 58% male to 42% female preference, almost exactly the same as the iPhone. While it would be easy to advocate that Verizon’s overtly machismo advertising campaign for Droid (one of the most popular Android handsets) helped skew the demographics, it doesn’t explain why its Palm ads targeting women failed to skew the webOS numbers. Perhaps it’s an unspoken man on robot love that we all recognize as truth but choose not to discuss openly for fear of reprisal? Or maybe it’s a lack of recognition for what Asian marketing geniuses figured out long ago: a device has to be pink and glittery with just a touch of lace to woo the more fickle tastes of the female demographic. Uh, yeah.
Also of interest is the Age by Platform data that shows 78% of iPod touch users are below the age of 25 compared to 25% of iPhone users and 24% of webOS and Android users. In fact, 65% of the platform are just 17 years of age or younger. That would explain the demand for all the biscuit floating apps. See the chart after the break.

For years, Hummers - each one somehow more massive and more polluting than the next - were the easiest target in the automotive world for environmentalists . Need examples? How about this and this and this and, oh, you get the picture.
General Motors has been trying to sell the brand to Tengzhong, a Chinese company, but announced yesterday that this will not happen. GM said that it is still listening to offers for the brand, but it’s looking likely that Hummer isn’t long for this world. To mark the news, we wanted to have a moment of silence for this tribute to the excesses of the 1990s and Naughts and the military mindset of the drivers bold enough to get behind the wheel, even the ones who think driving a Hummer is “a highly moral consumption choice.”
There, that’s long enough.
Don’t worry, Hummer haters. These automobiles will be on the road for years to come and, when they’re all gone, attention can turn to other gas guzzling monsters, like this year’s thirsty champion the Ford F-250 Lariat.

TransGaming has announced that it will be bringing D3Publisher’s hit puzzle-slash-RPG title Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords (Xbox 360, PSP, PS3, DS, Wii, PC, Mobile) to the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch.
It’s a pretty natural fit, considering the iPhone and iPod Touch’s touchscreen features. The game’s RPG elements are still there so it might turn out to be a rather, er, puzzling game for those who have no idea what “RPG” means, but the accessible puzzle aspect should balance that out.
The iPhone and iPod Touch version of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords has yet to be priced, but the announcement mentioned that it’s all set to become available on the iTunes App Store by this Fall.

You should by now be well aware that there’s no shortage of games one can play on one’s beloved Droid, but just for the FPS old schoolers out there, how’s about a nice Quake 3 port to pass the time with? Yup, the game that defined the term multiplayer before World of Warcraft came around has been enabled on the Android OS, finally finding another mobile home after residing on Nokia handsets for so long. For its short development time, this looks a very well refined translation of the software and offers you customizable controls to go with thoroughly playable frame rates. And if you have an older Android phone, don’t despair — Quake 2 has also been ported over, so once you’ve had an eyeful of the Droid, why not hit the source link to find out how to get in on the action?
[Thanks, Anders]
