There’s tiny sense in resisting the obvious: Google is slowly but surely taking over your life, but rather than get indignant and discombobulated, we’d suggest letting go and appreciating how much easier things are with the folks in Mountain View squarely in control. Take Google Goggles, for instance, which aims to convert cameraphone images into useful search results on its own Android platform. Up until now, we’ve been shown stock demos and videos of it running on conventional handsets, but seeing the Goggles hard at work on Sony Ericsson’s not-yet-released Xperia X10 is another thing entirely. Hop on past the break for the frames you’re craving, but don’t bank on this making the wait for stated phone any simpler to stomach.

The slow steady drip of details from the yet to be announced Nexus One continues today with a pair of accessories for the HTC / Google mashup. Above we’ve got a wireframe of the portrait-mode Desktop Dock to be known as model CR B410. What’s uncommon here is the inclusion of Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR in the dock when the Nexus One is already Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR capable. After all, we’ve heard that the handset includes a docking connector at its base so what additional functionality would the second Bluetooth radio provide? That mystery aside, the FCC test report also shows a configuration where the dock is tethered via an AV-jack to a DVD player to help pull your multimedia off the slate and into the living room. We’ve also grabbed a shot of the Nexus One navigating inside a car with the help of a dashboard clip mount — check it after the break along side another FCC photo.
[Thanks, elli8ness]

Compared to a regular job, being self-employed has its advantages. You typically have more than one source of (modest) income and are unlikely to get fired by more than one boss at a time. If you work in your home, the commute is short and the dress code easy. And, because you’re essentially always on the job, you get to combine work with play. So I nearly always work while on vacation… partly by choice, largely out of a need to get things done.
Which brings us to Honolulu, where I was recently asked to talk to a group of Hawai’i-based auto enthusiasts - creatively called the “Auto Lunch Bunch” - that meets once a month for lunch at the Waikiki yacht club (sounds fancier than it is). What did they want me to talk about? EVs and Hybrids? Yeah, I could do that.
Group organizer (and old friend) Bill Maloney, who is producer and host of the “Ohana Road” automotive Television show on Honolulu’s KITV (ABC) and writes an auto/humor column called (what else?) “A Bunch of Maloney,” for the Honolulu Advertiser, sweetened the offer by talking the local Toyota dealer into loaning me a new Prius for our six-day stay. Who could say no? (more after the jump)

Here’s a useful new addition to the wealth of iPhone homebrew apps out there. iPhone Backgrounder is a code application that lets you run multiple iPhone apps at once. That means even if you exit, state, Pandora, you’ll still be able to listen to it while you’re running another application.
This is a code app, so there’s no icon for it. To use iPhone Backgrounder, open up the app you want to use and hold down the Home button until you get a pop-up saying “Backgrounding Enabled (Continue holding to force quit). If you want to disable it, just hold down the Home button again.
One thing: Backgrounder will be disabled if you respring your SpringBoard. Also, there’s a chance that an application would immediately quit after you hold down the Home button. According to developer gaizin, this might be caused by Intelliscreen’s App Launch Boost feature, which can be disabled in Intelliscreen’s Performance page.
The catch here’s that running multiple apps, even in background mode, can drain your iPhone’s battery faster than usual. It’ll also make you device run slower. If that doesn’t bother you one bit, check this app out. It’s available on Cydia for free.

There’s certainly plenty of good looking iPhone games available these days, but things could be about to get quite a bit more interesting, as Epic has now demonstrated its Unreal Engine 3 (the same one used for games like Gears of War 2) running on the iPhone 3GS and 3rd gen iPod touch to our friend
Anand Shimpi of
AnandTech. Unfortunately, it hasn’t also announced any games or licensees that will be using the engine, but it seems care about it has at least managed to get it running remarkably well on the hardware — albeit in a somewhat limited demo, as you can see in the video after the break. What’s more, Epic also reportedly said that it would be showing off the engine running on “another mobile platform entirely” at CES next month, but didn’t drop any further hints besides that. Video after the break, and hit the read link for the full scoop.
