Ricardo’s HyBoost tries to refine ICE to emit 30-40% fewer CO2 emissions

Posted on 30 November 2009 by admin

While the search for alternatives to the internal combustion engine continues at labs across the world, work hasn’t stopped on those traditional powerplants. Auto parts supplier Ricardo, for example, had just announced its HyBoost project, which aims to reduce the CO2 emissions of a ” cost-effective, ultra-efficient gasoline engine in a C-segment passenger car” by something like 30-40 percent. That’s pretty impressive, and will take not only Ricardo’s resources but also that of the company’s partners: Controlled Power Technologies, the European Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium, Ford, Imperial College London, and Valeo. The test vehicle will perform as if it has a 2.0 liter engine underhood but will have CO2 emissions under 100 grams per km. The HyBoost project is scheduled to take two years and will incorporate a lot of the technologies already available, like exhaust gas recovery, stop-start and regenerative braking, among others, in one car. Full details after the jump.

iPhone homebrew - LiveTime

Posted on 30 November 2009 by admin

This is a nice mod right here. You might want to jailbreak your iPhone if only for this one. It’s called LiveTime, and it’s an app that animates and updates the clock on your SpringBoard, allowing it to display the current time. When you install LiveTime, it will start to animate your clock icon automatically.

Do note that when you first install LiveTime, it’s gonna be an overlay on your stock icon, so you’re gonna see the stock time under the animated clock. Installing LiveTime, however, adds a theme to WinterBoard with the title “LiveTime Clock.” Go into Winterboard and activate it, then the icon will change so that only the animated clock is shown.

Best part is, this baby is available in Cydia and comes for free!

Acer to unveil 8 to 10 phones next year, show more love to Android

Posted on 29 November 2009 by admin

Acer’s far from being a major player in the smartphone space, but to call it irrelevant would be grossly inaccurate. Up until now, however, the outfit has relied largely on Microsoft’s mobile OS to power its phones, though even it seems shocked by the warm reception the Android-powered Liquid has received. According to the company’s own Aymar de Lencquesaing, Acer recognizes that “there is definitely momentum behind Android,” and he continued by stating that “the pace is faster than most would have anticipated one year ago.” He went on to proclaim that the company was apt to pump out 8 to 10 phones in 2010, with next year’s lineup being “much more balanced” in terms of the amount of Windows Mobile vs. Android handsets. Look out, world — Google just might take over another huge portion of your life while you’re fixated on the next great Black Friday deal.

Mazda2 to be basis of electric vehicle test fleet

Until now, Mazda’s most notable substitute fuel programs have been the hydrogen-powered Wankel rotaries currently being used in an RX-8 test fleet. The “Zoom-Zoom” automaker has acknowledged plans to build new hybrid-powered automobiles in the coming years, but to date has avoided the battery electric automobile arena.

That’s about to change thanks to a newly-announced partnership with Itochu Corporation and Tsukuba City. Mazda and Itochu will convert three Demios (known as the Mazda2 outside of Japan) to plug-in battery power. Besides just testing the electric drives, the program will also test vehicle sharing services using the EVs as well as using renewable energy to charge the cars. The program will also evaluate battery reuse programs that put used EV energy systems into use in fixed applications. The test program will launch in March 2010.

Amazon selling Samsung Moment for $100 less than Sprint

Posted on 28 November 2009 by admin

Amazon is continuing its fabulous tradition of making carriers look like money-grubbing jerks this week with a solid deal on Samsung’s Android-powered Moment for Sprint, which can now be yours for $79.99 on contract. That’s versus a considerably more finance-destroying $179.99 figure if you were to walk into a brick-and-mortar Sprint store — and even bests Best Buy’s deal by $20. Considering that OLED display and the fact that the Sammy’s core clips along at 10 times the megahertz of Amazon’s price, $80 out-of-pocket sounds pretty reasonable. Unfortunately, Android 1.5 doesn’t sound as reasonable these days — so here’s hoping that 2.0 trickles down to this sucker on the double.

[Thanks, Ron]

BlackBerry Media Sync hits version 3.0 with 2-way photo management

Posted on 27 November 2009 by admin

Even after years of consumer-facing products and marketing, it’s still tough to use words like “media” and “BlackBerry” in the same sentence — but the fact of the matter is that RIM got out ahead of the 3.5mm headphone jack trend long before many other manufacturers did and currently offers cameras (not awesome cameras, but cameras nonetheless) on each modern model it sells. To that end, its Media Sync software has been helping suits get loose after the 9-to-5 with music management for well over a year now, and the latest version — available later today — adds some comprehensive photo capability to match. Media Sync 3.0 for Windows now includes automatic downsizing for photos transferred from PCs to devices (wouldn’t want to chew through your microSD card too fast, after all) and can automatically prompt users to pull in new pics snapped with the onboard camera after connecting. Makes you wish one of these things had a 5 megapixel sensor with decent optics, doesn’t it? Look for the download to go live on RIM’s site around noon this day.
