The iPhone Dev Team released a new version for their iPhone homebrew app collection, Windows QuickPwn 2.1. This new version supports the 2.1 firmware with the unlocking and jailbreaking of iPhone 3G (2G) device.
Apart from that, it also supports the jailbreaking of iPod Touch 1st generation device and iPhone 3G. You’ll need upgrade your device, though, to 2.1 through the use of iTunes 8 before you can successfully run this application.
Here’s the changelog:
- Support for firmware 2.1
- Auto-detection of firmware version, insistence on correct firmware bundle to prevent user epic fail.
- Use of iASign to activate to prevent bspatch epic fail.
- Removed buggy and never really tested 2.0 support
However, it does have its limitations, which are the following:
- It does NOT

Alright, look, we seriously have enough evidence here on our desk to put Sprint away for life convince even the most jaded naysayer that Sprint’s got a Hero on the way. It’s happening, end of story — but when, where, and how much? We don’t have the complete picture yet beyond recommendations of an October window, but we’ve just been tipped off here that Best Purchase Mobile locations will be taking $50 deposits for the phone starting on September 13 with an SKU of 9510013. Whether the phone will be popular enough to warrant relieving yourself of $50 a month (or more) ahead of time is unclear — especially with the InstinctQ in the pipe — but at least it looks like you’ll have the option.
[Thanks, anonymous tipster]

Finally, it’s official and in our hands for a review. Now you decide, with the addition of HDMI-CEC, bitstreaming for the latest codecs, and in a quieter smaller case (although it might be a little slower loading, for now) the PlayStation 3 Trim is better and cheaper than ever for your home theater. So let us know, is that enough to get you to buy one?

You’ve been posting your angry rants on the YouTubes for a while now, and quite frankly your act is getting old. You know what you need, right? A spec bump. How about replacing that built-in pinhole netbook webcam with this spicy number from Hercules? The Dualpix HD720p is (you guessed it) an HD-capable USB 2.0 webcam that supports up to 16:9 (1280 x 720) 30 fps and includes: autofocus, a “high quality” integrated mic, and software for XP / Vista / Windows 7. Not too shabby for something at the $59.99 price point. And after you get this guy rocking, maybe people will begin to take your anti-fluoridation crusade a tiny more seriously. Because we’re sure that the only thing that’s getting you mocked on the social networking sites is the quality of your videos — and not the inherent lunacy of your message. One more pic after the break.

In cities like New York, where bikers ride right alongside heavy traffic, bike helmets are a must. Trouble is, apparently plenty of riders don’t like wearing them because of vanity — most bike helmets aren’t exactly attractive, if you haven’t noticed. Well, the City of New York’s commissioned Projectfuse helmets — that combine safety with an attempt at decent stylings. The helmets feature a two-fold design, with an inner protective polystyrene, which is then covered with a customizable soft fabric that attaches with straps. No, you can’t purchase them yet, and we don’t know anything about pricing or availability yet, but we do know that you can score one for free — yes, free — at various events around the city. Let us know if you snag one!

We’ve seen the Pleo get shredded, overtaken by a Wii wand, and generally mocked for its status as a perennially endangered species. With no dignity left to protect, its makers have decided they might as well kick out an SDK, or PDK in this case, to let the great unwashed masses have their way with the originally autonomous bot. Still only in the alpha stage and not yet widely available, the dev kit has already borne fruit in the shape of a shockingly awesome dance video. We’ve got it for you after the break, but a warning first: prepare to fall in love all over again.
[Thanks, Eric]

Looks like dTunes developer Richard Shearman is really sinking quite a bit of time into his homebrew iTunes replacement for the iPhone. A new version has just been released, bringing dTunes up to version 2.3. Here’s the changelog:
- Keeps playing music after pressing home button
- Capability to add Folders & Sub-Folders
- Renaming of Files & Folders (double tap while in edit mode)
- Drag & Drop Files & Folders to move items (while in edit)
- Drag & Drop Files & Folders to delete (while in edit)
- Artwork Support
To enable artwork support, you’ll need to drop an image named cover.png in the appropriate directory. Images will be scaled to the 320 x 320 screen size. You can grab the latest version of dTunes from Cydia.

Streaming and subscription music services are a dime a dozen on iPhone, and they seem to get past Apple’s app store approval hurdles with relative ease. But Spotify was one whose fate wasn’t so clear cut, given its offline playlist function — which as the name advocates downloads songs ahead of time for you to listen to when there’s no WiFi or phone service to stream from — could very easily fall into the category of “duplication of core iPhone functionality” and get deep-sixed at the drop of a hat. Turns out that’s not the case here, as an Apple spokesperson has told paidContent UK that the app’s been given the metaphorical stamp of approval and would be hitting the store “very soon.” A premium subscription will run about

Injunctions, hail, sleet or snow, VIZIO kept shipping its LCD HDTVs in massive amounts during the second quarter, enough of them to account for 21.7% of the market, according to iSuppli. That was enough to narrowly hold off Samsung, which saw its numbers rise sharply from 17.8% in the previous quarter to 21.3%, reportedly due to its introduction and marketing of new LED sets, which contributed to 2.2 percent of all LCDs sold during the period. The analysts also see a growing trend of customers coming back for their second flat panel TV to replace an older one, just the kind of people it thinks might gravitate towards features like skinny, power efficient LED designs. We’ll see if that’s enough to swing the balance Samsung’s way, or if customers stick with VIZIO’s approach.

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Ron, who would just be happy with an ultraportable with an actual, bona fide, worthwhile GPU.
“I am looking for a 12- or 13-inch ultraportable that can also play modern games at a reasonable level, for less than $1,000. I know the brainiacs out there can help me out. Love the site, thanks!”
We know for sure that Dell’s Studio XPS 13 has the guts to pull off a few modern titles, but we know there are far more options out there than that. So, who here has a super small laptop with a discrete GPU worth bragging about? Don’t hold back now, vaquero.
