We’re not quite sure what makes this a “multimedia-capable LCD HDTV” more so than any other Television tuner-equipped LCD HDTV, but we’ll go with it for the sake of simplicity. ViewSonic has introduced a 24-inch LCD HDTV (native 1080p resolution) with a built-in ATSC / NTSC / QAM tuner, an internal “media player,” a USB port for loading up clips and an RS-232 control port for home automation gurus. Alongside that $449 panel, which is set to ship in Q2 of this year, the company also introducing its 42-inch ultrathin bezel CD4230 LCD at the Digital Signage Expo in Las Vegas, which features 500 nits of brightness, a 1,500:1 contrast ratio, RS-232 port, VGA / DVI sockets, support for VESA mounting and carry handles for easy transport. It’ll also land in Q2, but for $1,999.

Carlo Franchino a.k.a. Frank8 has released a swift update for CallerID Fix Collection. For those who haven’t come across this homebrew app yet, CallerID Fix Collection repairs caller ID mismatch and phone number formatting problems usually came across by iPhone users in countries where the iPhone isn’t officially distributed.
This update adds a few more countries to the 2.1 number formatting and caller ID fixes:
You can download the latest version of CallerID Fix Collection on the iSpazio repository through the Localization category found in both Installer 4 and Cydia.

If you want to get an answer to the question of whether or not consumers will flock to plug-in cars, Southern California Edison’s Ed Kjaer and Superior Place’s Sven Thesen would be great people to get to put up some answers. That’s exactly what happened at the Austin Alt Vehicle expo last weekend, where they presented an optimistic yet realistic assessment of what PHEVs might bring to the auto industry. The real question, Kjaer stated, isn’t “Will Consumers Purchase In?” but will the OEMs build PHEVs in volume? And that isn’t a given, not by a long shot. Kjaer didn’t dodge the original question, just posited that the answer is a pretty obvious “yes.” Whether or not we get the chance is the issue. Follow us after the jump for all the details.

Adding further fuel and confusion to the Nokia laptop fire sparked by yesterday’s comments from CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasuvo, we have DigiTimes reporting that Nokia is actively seeking Taiwanese manufacturing and design partners for its netbook — a very specific laptop form-factor. DigiTimes‘ sources wag their gossipy fingers in the direction of Compal and Foxconn (aka, Hon Hai Precision Industry) as the two most likely joint design manufacture (JDM) partners. However, instead of an ARM Cortex A9 Sparrow-powered device as speculated by Mobile-Review, DigiTimes claims that Nokia is developing a netbook powered by either Qualcomm’s Snapdragon (currently based around the ARMv7 architecture used in the ARM A8 Cortex CPU) or Intel’s Atom platforms. Of course, we could be looking at multiple form-factors from Nokia (MIDs, Netbooks, and laptops) in harmony with their successful approach to the mobile phone market.
Update: The chipset rumors are actually more closely aligned than they appeared at first glance. Mobile-Review said the Nokia’s Sparrow-based device wouldn’t ship until 2011 — that’s plenty of time for ARM-based Snapdragon to adopt the Cortex A9 processor.

It’s a sad, sad say of affairs. After almost four years worth of announcements you’re still more likely to get a good night’s rest on a flight than find wireless world wide web, leaving us to wonder whether any airline will survive long enough to roll-out the system-wide access they’ve almost all pledged. Another player is now crawling tardily into the ring, Alaska Airlines fulfilling its promise and partnering with Row 44 to offer satellite-based internets on a very limited basis. You should know the drill by now: access is only offered on very select routes, or route in this case, debuting on 737-300 flights running between Seattle (SEA) and San Jose (SJC). At least the service will be free for the first 90 60 days, but the airline isn’t saying how much it will cost after that. We’d guess somewhere between not free and way too much, leaning toward the latter.
Update: Correction, it’s only 60 days not 90, and we’re told by Glenn over at High-Fi News that it’s not just a single route it’s actually a single plane, and while it will be starting out on the SEA/SJC route, it will be making appearances elsewhere — maybe even in the land of the midnight sun!

Homebrew developer ZodTTD has finally released version 2.0.0 of his long-awaited Sega Genesis and Sega CD emulator, genesis4iphone. This version works with iPhones and iPod Touches running on firmware 2.x.x.
This release comes with the same skin as ZodTTD’s earlier release, mame4iphone, but the good news here is that you can actually change the skin yourself by editing the controller_hs1.png/.txt files in the Application directory of the app. Here’s a list of what else is new in v2.0.0:
- A port of Notaz’s continued support of PicoDrive.
- New interface/GUI similar to mame4iphone.
- Sound has been heavily improved! To enable sound, goto Now Playing and turn up the volume slider before entering a game.
- Save say support is now working.
- Supports zipped ROMs, and they happen to load much faster than unzipped ROMs…still!
- Sega CD support is implemented though currently untested by me.
genesis4iphone can be downloaded for free at ZodTTD’s public repository on Cydia.

You know, when we first read the image-less text describing Hyundai’s dolphin-shaped cellphone, our instinctual, caffeine-injected reflex was to launch into an angst-ridden assault on the MB-490i. Then we saw the photos and, well, dammit, we kind of care about it. Somehow Hyundai managed to make the aquatic scroll-wheel on the front mirrored by cascading waves of aluminum along the backside work. Even the pale blue eyeball on the side comes across as tasteful without kitsch. Spec-wise, we’re looking at a 240 x 400 touchscreen display augmented by a swipeable touchscreen surface below, a 2.0 megapixel camera (no flash), Yamaha speaker, Bluetooth, and a €250 price tag when it launches in Might. Check the photos after the break and sound-off in the comments with your view.
